Japan

Yokosuka, Japan 2011

Once again, I was planning my next journey with Camp Adventure before I even made it home from England. The turn around this time was about a month and I was off to Japan! I served as the Camp Director at the Navy Housing Base of Ikego, just inland of the main base, Yokosuka (where we were housed). This time, the summer camp lasted for ten weeks (nine weeks of camp).

The best way to beat that jet-lag: jump into the base pool before 7:00am and swim laps. I may have been grumpy about having to get moving so early the twelve hours after arriving on base, but it is effective. A week of training, base orientation, and camp preparation later and we were ready to begin. My daily camp schedule looked generally like this:

0650    Get on bus at housing and head to youth center on main base.
0700    Pick up a handful of campers and leave for Ikego Housing Unit.
0730    Arrive at Ikego, begin set-up to start the day.
0800    Begin the camp day!
The day is filled with various games, crafts, and club activities.

Monday, Tuesday, and Friday we spent two hours at the pool.
Wednesday we went on field trips to amusement/ city/ water parks and museums.
Thursday we went bowling for two hours.

1630    Get back on the bus to head to main base.
1700    Arrive at youth center on main base and walk back to housing.

As you can see from the schedule, they were jam-packed days of fun. Once again, I was able to travel on the weekends. I limited my travels to day trips to save costs, since I would be returning to begin my teacher credential courses at Sac State. Yokosuka Naval Base is within an hour train ride to the districts of Tokyo, so this made day trips extremely easy. I will tell the rest of my story through photos :)
